We’re obviously delighted that you’re signing up for La Leyenda, but now you need to get to Manizales for the start of the race! We’ve put together the following Travel guide which will be useful for all participants, whether you’re coming from Colombia or further afield.
TRAVELLING TO AND FROM MANIZALES
Manizales will be the start of the second edition of La Leyenda and is located in the department of Caldas, La Nubia is the nearest Airport (MZL) and is a short 20 minute taxi ride to the city centre. Alternatively Pereira located 1 hour to the south of Manizales also has the Matecaña Airport (PEI).
If you are travelling from within Colombia in your own transport, Manizales can be found on Highway 50, approximately 7 hours from Bogotá, 5 hours from Medellin or 5 hours from Cali.
For those that are worried about altitude during the race, it should be pointed out that Manizales lies at approximately 2,160m, the first few stages of the race and prologue do not go much above this however during the second half of the race you will go up to 4000m. It is therefore advisable to get to Manizales a few days before the start to begin the acclimatisation process.
ACCOMODATION IN MANIZALES
Please also remember that accommodation in Manizales before the Prologue and after Stage 6 is not included in any package. However, we can recommend the following pre and post race accommodation which caters for a range of tastes and budgets. All the recommended hotels can deal with emails in English and take international payments by credit card or bank transfer.
Colombia is a tropical country, but with huge contrasts in climates, flora and fauna due to the constant changes in altitude formed by the country’s three mountain chains. Being in the tropics requires certain basic precautions against diseases, which are generally easily avoided, but can be serious if contracted. We recommend consulting an external source such as NHS fitfortravel (UK) or the US State Department for further advice about vaccinations that should be taken before travel and precautions to take once here. You should plan for any vaccinations at least a month before you fly to Colombia.
Colombia is a very welcoming country to foreigners, in general, but you should check the official Colombia Travel page to see if you will be required to apply for a visa prior to travelling. If you plan to stay for more than 60 days you will have to consult the Colombian Consulate in your home country to see which Visa you will be required to apply for. You will also be liable to pay a Departure Tax of USD $38 at the airport to leave the country which is waived if staying under 60 days.
